How to make a Budget

Hello,

I try to make a budget for 2013, and find it difficult to set up a budget for 2013 as well to produce a 'clean' report. I like to include (if possible) some estimates which I believe have a high probability for a sale in 2013.

ESTIMATES
As far I do understand, the Estimates section is for the production of a sales pipeline. As far an estimate turns into a sale, you can easily transfer the estimate into an sales invoice to your P&L. A suggestion I like to make is:
a) an option for each Estimate to include the estimate into the budget;
b) to give a probability to the estimate, so you can see the 'weighted' sales pipeline, which then could go into the budget (point a).

BUDGET
In the "Income from Sales" sub-items, as well "Direct and Indirect Expenses" sub-items, I have added a budget for this year. Next I want to view a report. so I go to Other Report, next Monthly Breakdown, and tick Budget (see attached screenshot). Why does the system not show the sub-items of my budget? I only see the amounts, but not the line items.

A Suggestion is to have a separate report option, Budget Report, which shows the budget you have made. Another consideration is to add an option when you expect the payment of the budget sub-item, as such you can run a Budget Report (based on the accounting) as well run a Budget Cash Flow Report.

I look forward to your feedback how to set up a Budget.

thans, Oscar

    Thank you for your question.

The budget feature is to simple show detail in the monthly report and can be set up for information and changed when you like.

Thank you for your estimates suggestion.

    Hi Karen,

Sorry but I still do not understand, why I don't see the individual line items in my budget?

    What I do is
    - I go to Tab: Accounts - then click on a line item, ie.Phone & Internet - the I add a budget for this line item (see screenshot A attached).

    Next I want to check if I can see this line item in my budget;
    - I go to Other Reports - Report "Monthly Breakdown" - I select a time period 1-1-2013 until 31-12-2013 - I do tick; Show Budgets (see screenshot B attached).

I actually only see the line times of any realized bookings, in screenshot B, only Office Food & Beverage.

Please advice how I can set up and run a budget which show all my line items for the year to come.

    thanks, Oscar

From your screenshots the account with the budgets is not in use and is showing a zero balance, if you had some figures, then the budgets would show against the months with figures.

    I hope that helps,

    Karen

    Hi Karen,

That is exactly the point. Currently EB only allows to compare budget with realized figures (only), i.e. my 2012 figures.

But I now want to make a plan for 2013, but don't have a full overview after I have consolidated my 2012 figures. A recommendation/consideration for you is to add an additional report in EB, called "Budget Monthly Breakdown" which shows my FULL budget for this year in one clean overview, as well I can tick in the current monthly breakdown the budget button. Only point here is that if you tick this budget button in the Monthly Breakdown, I want to see ALL line items which have a budget figure input. Currently is shows only the line item which has a realized booking, and this is very annoying, because it simple does not provide a full budget overview.

    Do you see my point?

    Please advice, Oscar

I'm very sorry, I didn't really understand what you meant.

I am putting this forward to the Tech team to look into for you.

    Thank you for the question,

    Karen

    Hi Karen,

Many thanks, I think it is a relative easy fix to do for the tech team, and it will be a really enhancement of EB, to have a budget looking forward! (not backward). What is the expected lead time for response?

I am looking forward to your response. Best, Oscar

We have discussed this, but unfortunately, we do not have any plans to add this feature.

I'm very sorry to disappoint you, but we want to keep the app as simple as we can, and the budget was designed for the accounts in use, to look back at how figures relate to those set.

    Thank you for your time,

    Karen

    Hi Karen,

Absolute disappointing outcome! I appreciate EB is simple in use, but my belief is that most of your clients want to budget the year ahead, not simply look back.

The current budget function in EB is simply not logical, to have the availability to add budget figures, but you can view those only when you have realized bookings in the running year.

You really want me and other clients want to make a budget ahead for 2013 in a separate excel out site EB?

I do believe it is a simple edit on your end, with great additional functionality for clients. I hope your team do reconsider the budget edit.

I'd dearly love not to disappoint you, but we have daily requests for new features and we have to make decisions based on the time we have available.

We have definitely heard your enthusiasm for the feature and have taken a note for the future. Thank you again,

    Karen
